It is about telling your story to your customers in a way that will make them want to buy.  It includes traditional advertising, new media marketing (social media, websites, ad words etc), outreach to existing or new customers, networking and more.

Good marketing is reaching the customers you have and getting them to buy more, and reaching the customers you want and getting them to buy something.  There are many ways to do that.
